If the arena was a giant cake (Peeta’s POV)
I took one last glimpse at Portia as I rise on my plate up to the arena. I kept my eyes closed because I didn’t want to see what kind of torture zone the Capitol has chosen for our deaths. I unwillingly take in the scent around me, and my eyes immediately open. The smell was sugary and sweet, like when I had just finished frosting a cake back in the bakery and my father puts it in the window. I saw a giant wall of pink a few metres in front of me, and there no mistaking that this was made of frosting. Then I remember that day between Katniss and I at the camouflage station at training.
“You never know. Say the arena’s actually a giant cake-“
"Say we move on,"
That’s when it hit me, the arena is a giant cake
I could see Katniss just a few tributes to my left. She looks absolutely stunned, but when she stares at me, I can’t help but smile. I can see that she thinks that I am thinking that the games are all mine, when really I’m just internally laughing at how she and all the other tributes are seeing this as the most ridiculous thing in the history of the games.
I decided to take my mind off the others and tried to locate the cornucopia. I could just see it sitting right at the very top of the cake. Impossible, I thought to myself, we have to climb up 4 layers of cake to get the top? Who do they think we are?
I didn’t have enough time to prepare myself when the gong goes off and I’m sprinting towards the frosting wall. At that moment I saw that they built a ladder of wafer, at least that’s what I think it was, leading up to the cornucopia. I dashed to the ladder and climbed as fast as I could. It wasn’t very stable as each step broke at least once under my weight. After the climb, I finally reached the cornucopia. I was the first to reach it, so I got a good look at all the weapons. I rummaged through everything and I saw an overall theme, everything was made of sweets. The knifes were candy canes that were sharpened, ropes were jelly snakes. My mouth was watering because it all looked so good, but my heart stopped when I spied something in the very corner, a stack of sacks of flour. It was like the Gamemakers had designed these games especially for me. That’s when I heard the Careers come up from behind me and I had a sack of flour in my hand.
These games are mine.
